(I don't know why some of the letters below look all messed up. It came to me that way.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Subject: Fwd: Legislative Proposal to Reinstate Eliminated Varsity Teams: Possible conversion of pledges to checks * Dear Loyal Fencing Supporter and/or Donor, There has, of course, been a lot of publicity and, from the University, a lot of obstinacy, but this is definitely far from over. On Monday, an influential and supportive legislative leader who does not, for a second, buy the Rutgers “party line” will be meeting with Mulcahyand McCormick in an effort to have Rutgers change course. He is expected to put on the table a legislative proposal, including some funding. The pledges which the teams have raised will, as part of that proposal, have to be converted now to real checks if Rutgers communicates willingness to reinstate the teams. We are not asking for those checks right now, but we want to let you know that we may need to ask for them on Monday if progress is made. If we do need your checks then, we will ask that you deliver them to us, payable to Rutgers University (or Scarlet R " we’ll get the specifics), *but on the condition that we will not turn them over to Rutgers unless the Men’s & Women’s Fencing Team is reinstated.* ** The eliminated teams, in the aggregate, have raised $985,000 (some of which extends over a 3-year period). Fencing has raised $85,000 of our anticipated $191,000+ budget for 2007-08. Each and every one of your pledges is very, very important to us. We would like to do better and pledge more, if at all possible. A number of you have indicated that your pledges were the “minimum” which you would give, and that you may consider giving more. This is now the time to give serious consideration to increasing those pledges, and letting us know by this weekend if you are prepared to do that, as our fund raising efforts will make a difference in the decision (and we do lag behind the other teams). We need to let the Senator know of our latest number on Sunday. For those who have indicated a desire to pledge an amount but have not yet done so, NOW is the time! We have attached a pledge form for you to use if you like. Again, these are pledges only " we will advise ASAP what the status of these negotiations is and whether the pledges will need to be converted to checks and, ultimately, cash. We hope that we are asked to deliver the funds. We will keep you posted. Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments at any time.
